Expressing gratitude for the caregivers who help make our lives easier is important, yet we often take it for granted.  Sometimes we get so caught up in our busy lives with all its demands that we forget to show our appreciation.  Here are 10 simple ways to say ‘thank you’ to a senior care provider.

  1. Listen – sometimes just lending a listening ear can let a caregiver know how much they are appreciated.
  2. Write a note – receiving a personal handwritten note saying thank you can go a long way to show how much you appreciate their love and support.
  3. Actions – most of us have heard the expression “actions speak louder than words.”
  4. Patience – we all have our good days and bad days.  Knowing and being understanding when caregivers seem frustrated or upset demonstrates how much you value their commitment.
  5. Offer a bonus – sometimes an extra monetary bonus will let the caregiver know that you appreciate the job they are doing.  Some senior care service agencies have a policy that nurses or aides are not allowed to accept gifts so check with the agency to see what is permissible.
  6. Donation – making a donation in the caregiver’s name to a favorite cause or charity is a nice alternative to cash, and a simple way to say thanks.
  7. Say it – the easiest way to give thanks is by verbally saying a sincere, heartfelt thank you.
  8. Surprise them with their favorite food or dessert – whipping up their favorite dish is a sincere token of appreciation.  They will see the time and effort that you put into their favorite tasty food.
  9. Have a party – gather some friends and family and honor the caregiver who provides you with a much-needed break.  Compose a speech pointing out the many ways the caregiver has been helpful.  Other friends or family members may be willing to say something as well.
  10. Get to know your caregiver – take time to ask your caregiver about their life and loved ones.  This will send a clear message that you value them as a person as well as a caregiver.

Everyone likes to be acknowledged and appreciated.  The simple things that you do to show a senior care provider that you appreciate them will go a long way.
